Information message about appreciable earthquake at the Dagestan coast of Caspian Sea on January, 11, 2007.

     On January, 11, 2007 at the Dagestan coast of Caspian Sea there was an appreciable earthquake. It has happen at 06:58 a.m. Moscow time (03:58 a.m. GMT) with magnitude 5.2 and intensity up to 5 MSK felt in the adjacent populated places.
     Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 45 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
     Preliminary processing has been done with data from 24 stations, accurate processing - with data 38 stations.
     Figure 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Kuba-Taba (∆ 4.1º), Piatigorsk (∆ 4.4º), Shidzhatmaz (∆ 4.6º), Kislovodsk (∆ 4.7º), Sochi (∆ 6.7º). Figure 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Obninsk (∆ 14.9º), Arti (∆ 15.3º), Borovoe (∆ 17.9º), Pulkovo (∆ 20.7º), Vasula (∆ 21.1º).

  • Epicenter
         This earthquake has taken place in seismic active area of Dagestan. Earlier in this area there were earthquakes with magnitudes nearly 6. These are the earthquakes which happened in 918 +/-10 years in the area of Derbent with М=6.1, South-Dagestan earthquake on June, 26, 1889 with М=5.9 and on October, 30, 1909 with М=5.8, and Caspian earthquake on April, 9, 1935 with М=6.3. The previous earthquake in this zone has taken place on September, 11, 2006 with М=4.9 and was felt in a coastal zone with intensity up to 5 MSK.

    Macroseismic manifestations
          This earthquake was felt at the Dagestan coast of Caspian Sea. It was felt with intensity 4-5 MCK in the settlements Dagestan Fires, Derbent and Izberbash. In Makhachkala city it was felt with intensity 3-4 MSK. In Derbent and Dagestan Fires the strong roar has been heard before the main shock.
