Information message about the earthquake in South Italy on October 31, 2002

On October 3, 2002 destructive earthquake has happened in South Italy. It occured at 13 hours 33 minutes of Moscow time (10:33am GMT).
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 60 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 25 stations, accurate processing - with data 34 stations.
Figure 1 represents fragments of records for vertical components (BHZ) from digital stations obtained by IPC in a near to real time mode: Kongberg, Norway (delta 18 degrees), Obninsk (delta 19 degrees), Pulkovo (delta 20 degrees), Kislovodsk delta 20 degrees), Arti (delta 22 degrees). Figure 2 represents vertical components (BHZ) from digital stations: Talaya (delta 58 degrees), Ulan-Bator, Mongolia (delta 61 degrees), Bilibino (delta 69 degrees), Magadan (delta 72 degrees), South-Sahalin (delta 80 degrees).

As a result of this earthquake 29 men have been perished including 26 children. Detailed information about this earthquake, seismic activity in this region, tectonics situation in this region and macroseimic consequences of this earthquake may be found on the site of American National Center of the earthquakes data at - http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin and on the site of Mediterranean Seismological Center at EUROPEAN-MEDITERRANEAN SEISMOLOGICAL CENTRE
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism solution for the earthquake 31.10.2002 origin has been calculated with TMC method in NEIC - National Earthquakes Information Center of US Geological Service and in HARVARD Center(USA), they are presented in table 2 and shown on figures 3-4. It is seen, that solutions obtained by different centers are almost identical. This earthquake has happened under the action of nearly equal in value forces of compression and expansion, oriented to the North-West-South-East and North-East-South-West, respectively. Both nodal planes are vertical, one of them has near to latitudinal spread direction, the other one - near to longitudinal. Type of motion along both planes - shift. Values of seismic moment Мо calculated with Р-wave spectra at stations Talaya and Arti made 1.2*10**25 D*CM. Value of moment magnitude made Mw =6.0. The values of seismic moment Мо obtained with TMC method in NEIC and HARVARD made 7.3*10**24 D*CM and 4.0*10**24 D*CM respectively. Value of moment magnitude - from data of NEIC - Mw =5.9, HARVARD - Mw =5.7.
