Information message about the earthquake in Turkey on February 3, 2002

On February 3, 2002 the destructive earthquake has happened in Turkey (in its Western part). It occured at 10:11 Moscow time (07:11 GMT) and had magnitude 6.2.
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 60 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Figure 1 presents fragments of records from digital stations Kislovodsk, Garni, Obninsk, Arti (delta 10 – 25 degrees), figure 2 presents records from digital stations Borovoe, Talaya, Yakutsk, Bilibino (delta 30 – 68 degrees).

  • Epicenter
Hypocenter of this earthquake was nearly 150 km to the South from destructive earthquakes of 1999 (on August 17 with M=7.6 and on November 12 with M=7.2), which killed more than 17 thousand people.
    Macroseismic manifestations
This earthquake has happened on February 3 at 9:11 local time. Its hypocenter was located in Bolvadin district, in the West of Turkey. It was felt in many central, Southern and North-Western regions of Turkey. The number of dead in accordance with info from crisis committee of Turkish interior ministry by February 4 was 45 men, the number of victims was 200 men, more than 10 of them are in critical condition. More than 150 buildings were destroyed, big cracks were created in many houses, electricity supply lines were damaged, faults in telephone system were noticed. Within one day nearly 60 undeground blows have been registered, magnitude of the strongest one on February 3 at 12:26 made М=5.4.

Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Solutions of focal mechanism for the earthquake's origin were calculated with TMC method in different centers - European - Mediterranean seismological center, National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), HARVARD (USA), they are presented in table 2 and shown on fig. 4-6. Focal mechanisms of the Earthquake on March 25, 2002 from data of NEIC (fig.4), HARVARD (fig.5), CSEM(fig.6). Value of seismic moment Мо calculated from Р-wave spectra in Obninsk made 2.1*10**25 D*CM. Values of seismic moment Мо from data of NEIC, HARVARD and CSEM are close to the value determined in Obninsk and made 2.9*10**25 D*CM , 5.9*10**25 D*CM and 1.1*10*25 D*CM respectively. Value of moment magnitude determined in Obninsk made Mw=6.2 , NEIC - Mw=6.3, HARVARD - Mw=6.5 ,CSEM - Mw=6.0
