Information message about the earthquake on May 22, 2001 in southwest of Russia |
On May 22, 2001 at 23 hours 13 mines of Moscow time (at 19 hours 13 mines GMT) appreciable earthquake have taken place in a southwest of Russia in 60 kms to the east from Salsk of Rostov area. The earthquake was felt in Rostov Region, in cities of Krasnodar and Stavropol areas. Its intensity reached 4-5 MSK. |
Parameters of the earthquake
have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information
Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data
obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS
and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 60 min after
registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM). |
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 8 stations, accurate processing - with data 15 stations. |
IPC GS RAS also has obtained information with parameters of this event from some seismological centers, these data are given in table 1: |
Note: More accurate calculations have been done with data from nearest to hypocenter seismic station in Gifitskoe (174 km) and radio telemetering points of survey at Caucasus Mineral Waters Geodynamics Test Area (dis-tances from 200 to 330 km). Also data have b |

Macroseismic manifestations |
Origin location is shown on fig. 1. This earthquake happened on Skiff platform in the zone of week seismic conditions and is associated with Novocherkassk rupture (map "Most important ruptures of Caucasus Region" from A.Rogizhin, 1999).
Hypocenter of this earthquake was located at South-West of Russia, 60 km to the east from Salsk. It was felt in Salsk with intensity 4-5 MSK, in towns Kropotkin, Armavir, Novokubansk - 4 MSK, in Stavropol, Nevinno-misk - 3-4 MSK, Piatigorsk - 2 MSK. It is known from data of Civil Defence Center in Salsk that plaster in private houses was strewed. Civil Defense centers in Krasnodar, Kropotkin, Armavir, Novokubansk inform that sensitive swinging and motion of things in houses have been noticed (e.g. electric lamps were swinging and dishes moving at the level of 5-th floor). Civil Defense Center in Stavropol informs that significant lamps swinging in some houses has been seen along with vibrations and noises, the same things have been registered in eastern part of Nevinnomisk town.

Historical records |
According to the "New Catalogue of strong earthquakes on the territory of USSR" seismotectonic activity of Novocherkassk rupture is known since 1907, when it was registered the earthquake on November 25, 1907 with magnitude 3.2 at the North-Western end of this rupture (see fig.1). Origin of that earthquake was determined from macroseismic data, it was felt (from data of I.V. Ananin,1977) in Proletarskaya settlement (Velikoknaizheskaya) with intensity 5 MSK - furniture in houses was swinging and citizens ran to the streets in danger. During "instrumental period" of monitoring seismic activities were registered in the Northern Caucasus, such events have been seen in the zone of rupture in 1984 and 1996 with magnitudes 2.7 and 3.3 respectively (fig.1).
