Information message about sensitive earthquake in Abkhazia - Karachay-Cherkessia border region, May 28, 2013

The sensitive earthquake with M=5.4 has occurred in Abkhazia - Karachay-Cherkessia border region on May 28, 2013 at 00:09 GMT (04:09 Moscow time).
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 15 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 47 stations, accurate processing - with data 59 stations.
     Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Neitrino (∆ 0.8º), Kislovodsk (∆ 1.0º), Nalchik (∆ 1.4º), Grozny (∆ 3.0º), Garni (∆ 3.9º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Isparta (∆ 10.0º), Kiev (∆ 11.3º), Obninsk (∆ 12.4º), Arti (∆ 17.1º), Vasula (∆ 17.9º).

    Macroseismic manifestations
According to GS RAS this earthquake was felt in Sochi with intensity 3-4 MSK. According to NEIC USGS it was felt in Kutaisi and Sukhumi with intensity 2.
    Historical records
This earthquake has occurred 12 km S of sensitive earthquake of March 26, 2013 with mb=5.2
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism in stereographic projection on the lower hemisphere determined with the U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center (USGS NEIC) on the basis of P-wave first arrivals for the «Best double couple» model is shown in Figure 4, its elements are given in Table 2. The earthquake has occurred under the action of a slight predominance of compressive stress oriented to the south, the tensile stress is directed to the north-west. The nodal plane NP2 is nearly vertical (DP=76º) with north-east strike, the plane NP1 is flatter (DP=39º) with north-west strike. Type of motion on the vertical plane NP2 is reverse fault with components of left-lateral strike slip. On the flat plane NP1 a right-lateral strike slip with thrust components occurred. Seismic moment of the earthquake, obtained with IPC GS RAS from the P-wave spectra at the "Talaya» station (Δ41.61º), is Mo=2.1*10**17 Nm, Mw=5.5. According to the USGS NEIC Mo=5.0*10**16 Nm, Mw=5.1.
