Information message about the strong earthquake off south-eastern coast of Kamchatka, February 28, 2013

     The strong earthquake with M=7.0 has occurred on February 28, 2013 at 14:05 GMT (18:05 Moscow time) off south-eastern coast of Kamchatka.
     Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 11 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
     Preliminary processing has been done with data from 62 stations, accurate processing - with data 68 stations.
     Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Severo-Kurilsk (∆ 0.8º), Petropavlovsk (∆ 2.3º), Kurilsk (∆ 8.5º), Magadan (∆ 9.5º), Yuzhno-Kurilsk (∆ 10.4º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Seimchan (∆ 12.4º), Kuldur (∆ 16.51º), Bilibino (∆ 17.8º), Mys Shultsa (∆ 19.7º), Hailar (∆ 24.1º).

  • Epicenter
         Fig. 3 presents with blue star epicenter of this earthquake which origin was located in Pacific Ocean at the depth of 50 km, 93 km E-N-E of Severo-Kurilsk, 93 km S-E of Ozernovsky, 258 km S-S-W of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatky.

    Aftershock
         IPC of Kamchatka Branch of GS RAS registered more than 20 aftershocks with energy class Ks≥8 within the day after the main shock. The most significant aftershocks have occurred on March 1 at 12:53 with М=6.5 and at 13:20 with М=6.7. Information on them in accordance with GS RAS is presented below. These shocks were felt in Severo-Kurilsk with intensities 5 and 6 respectively, in Petropavlosk-Kamchatsky both shocks were felt with intensities 3-4.

    Macroseismic manifestations
         In accordance with GS RAS this earthquake was felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Severo-Kurilsk with intensity 5. Information Agency RIA New Region – Far East informs that "resque team started investigate buildings in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Severo-Kurilsk, Elizovo and Vilichinsk to find destructions" "The earthquake was felt at Parumushir Island. Regional seismic station reported about «moving computers and monitors installed on the tables and swinging electric lamps». Underwater shock which epicenter was located 106 km off Severo-Kurilsk town caused short electricity supply interrupt but without victims and destructions, as it was reported by town's chief deputy Mr. Vasily saprikin"- from ITAR TASS report.
