Information message about the sensitive earthquake in Mountainaous Altai on January 24, 2013

     The sensitive earthquake with magnitude M=5.1 has occurred on January 24, 2013 at 07:35 GMT (11:35 Moscow Time) in the southern highlands of Altai in the Kosh-Agach region of the Altai Republic, this is the border area between Russia, China and Kazakhstan.
     Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 13 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
     Preliminary processing has been done with data from 45 stations, accurate processing - with data 51 stations.
     Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Dzhazator (∆ 0.1º), Kurchatov (∆ 5.9º), Kungurtug (∆ 6.4º), Borovoe (∆ 11.3º), Ala-Archa (∆ 11.5º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Ulaanbaatar (∆ 13º), Arti (∆ 18.6º), Kuldur (∆ 28.3º), Tiksi (∆ 28.8º), Storozhevoe (∆ 30.4º).

     IPC GS RAS also has obtained information with parameters of this event from some seismological centers, these data are given in table 1:

  • Epicenter
         Fig. 3 presents with red star epicenter of this earthquake which origin was located in Mountainous Altai at the depth of 10 km, 64 km S of Aktasha in in Ulaginsk region, 275 km S-E of regional capital Gorno-Altaisk.

         GS RAS registered 2 afteshocks with M≥4.3 within two days after the main shock.

    Macroseismic manifestations
         In accordance with information agency ITAR-TASS: "Many residents of regional capital Gorno Altaisk felt the wave which traveled 300 km from the source area. EMERCOM appealed to the residents and asked them to keep calm. This earthquake was felt by residents of southern cities of Kemerovo Region. This was reported by press-service of regional EMERCOM. The underground shocks were felt in some cities of Kuzbass Area - Novokuznetsk, Belovo. No victims or destructions were registered" In accordance with Kazakh National Data Center this earthquake was felt in Zirianovsk and Ridder towns with intensities 2-3.
    Historical records
         Epicenter of this earthquake is located in 25 km S-S-W of the epicenter of the Chuya (Altay) earthquake September 27, 2003 with magnitude М=7.3.
