Information message about sensitive earthquake in Chechen Republic, June 9, 2010

The sensitive earthquake with M=4.9 has occurred on June 9, 2010 at 17:25 GMT (June 9 at 21:25 Moscow Time) in Chechen Republic. Another shock has occurred in 4 minutes after that.
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 25 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Summarized processing for initial shock was done with data obtained from 22 stations, for the secondary shock with data from 16 stations.
     Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Terskaya (∆ 0.6º), Botlikh (∆ 1º), Nalchik (∆ 1.5º), Gunib (∆ 1.6º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Makhachkala (∆ 1.6º), Kislovodsk (∆ 2.1º), Gofitskoe (∆ 2.4º), Garni (∆ 3.6º).

  • Epicenter
Fig. 3 depicts with yellow star epicenter of initial shock, it's origin was located on the territory of Chechen Republic at the depth of 20 km, 28 km N-N-W from Grozny, 50 km W-N-W from Gudermes, 70 km E-S-E from Nazran and 100 km W-S-W from Kizlar. Red star depicts epicenter of the secondary earthquake, it's origin was located 5 km N-W from origin place of initial shack, at the depth of 10 km.

This earhquake was felt in Grozny with 4-5 MSK, in Makhachkala - with 3 MSK.
    Historical records
Seismic tectonic location of this earthquake is predefined by it’s belonging to Tersko Sunzhinsk Zone [Dr. Nesmeyanov and others, 1996], in Bensk-Eldarovsk diagonal stitch zone. Fig. 4 shows epicenter of initial shock with seimic tectonic scheme in the background [Dr. Bogachkin and others., 1990) along with epicenters of most significant earthquakes of this zone – Chernogorsk eathquake 1976with М=6.2, 1984 with М=5.2, 1989 with М=5.1 and Kurchaloisk earthquake on October 11, 2008 with М=5.6. The first 5 months of 2010 were rather calm in Tersko Sunzhinsk Zone in accordance with data from North Osetia branch of GS RAS and AS GS RAS (fig.5, red stars depict 3 shocks on June 9, 2010)

    Figure 5
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism solution was calculated with initial signs of Р waves motion at 16 seismic stations, which surround rather well it’s epicenter and are located at the distances from 1 to 23 degrees. The type of motion along both planes - uplift (fig.6). Propagation of NPI nodal plane coincides with spread direction of Benoisko-Eldarovsk stitch zone. The earthquake has occurred under the action of compression forces having N-E orientation.
